Research presentation
On Monday 25th October, at the Aero Club in Belgrade, Ministry of Health organized an expert conference to present the results of two studies carried out under the Project to fight HIV, funded by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Presenters at the expert conference were Dr. Ivana Misic, Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Tanja Knezevic, director of the Institute of Public Health of Serbia, Dr. Danijela Simic, National Office for HIV/AIDS, Violeta Andjelkovic, International Aid Network IAN, Project coordinator for HIV and mental health, and Dr. Farida Bassioni Stamenic, Monitoring and Evaluation assistant of the Project of the Ministry of Health.
The research "Perception of knowledge, attitudes and behaviours of health professionals related to HIV in 2010" was conducted during January and February 2010 by IAN Section for HIV and mental health. The same research was for the first time organized and conducted by the non-governmental organization supported by the Ministry of Health's resources. Previously, it was conducted in a two year period by the National Institute for Public Health of Republic of Serbia "Dr Milan Jovanovic Batut",
The aim of the research was to explore knowledge and attitudes of health professionals related to HIV, as well as their perception of risk for HIV in their workplace. The research was conducted on a representative sample of 1502 health professionals from 92 health institutions in Serbia . Research results clearly indicate the need for organizing continuous education for health professionals (doctors and medical nurses) on all levels of health care (tertiary and secondary are in greater need for additional education) in the areas where they showed the poorest knowledge. On the basis of research results, HIV and mental health section created training program and delivered it to health workers, in cooperation with Ministry of Health and local training teams. 417 health professionals from 16 towns in Serbia took part in the training program in the period of May-June 2010. The education was highly evaluated and recommended by the participants.
