IAN has become a part of National Preventive Mechanism against Torture
February 2012

As decided by Serbian ombudsperson, International Aid Network IAN is selected to be a part of National Preventive Mechanism against Torture, as organisation in charge of systematic monitoring of psychiatric institutions.

National Assembly of Republic of Serbia, in July 2011 passed Law Amending the Law on Ratification of the Optional protocol to the Convention against torture (OPCAT) appointing the Serbian Ombudsperson as a National Preventive Mechanism against Torture (NPM). In work of NPM ombudsperson is supposed to collaborate with ombudsperson of Vojvodina and civil society organisations whose aim is protection and improvement of human rights.

According to public call for organisations and report of the Committee for selection, Serbian ombudsperson announced Decision that appoints International Aid Network IAN one of selected organisations with whom ombudsperson is going to collaborate within NPM. From nine organisations, four are selected to be in charge of systematic monitoring of four types of institutions and International Aid Network IAN will monitor psychiatric institutions.

Besides IAN, following organisations have become part of NPM: Belgrade Centre for Human Rights (in charge of monitoring of police stations), Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia (monitoring of prisons), Mental Disability Rights Initiative of Serbia (monitoring of social institutions), then, Victimology Society of Serbia, Dialogue, Human Rights Committee Valjevo, and Centre for Human Rights Nis.

Current year is announced a year of psychiatry and most of the monitoring activities will be directed to psychiatric institutions, so IAN will have important role in the activities of NPM during this year.
