Trainings "Mental health and HIV/AIDS"

One of the main expert centre activities is to implement continuous training programme in order to educate change agents in mental health aspects of HIV and AIDS, including prevention. In 2007-2008 three modules of training were delivered with nine training events and over 80 trained professionals in mental health and HIV. All participants are encouraged to take part in all four training modules. Teaching and learning methods are innovative for participants although they have basic knowledge.

The training curriculum consists of four training modules:

1 Introduction to mental health and HIV/AIDS

2 Supporting people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) who have special needs

3 Social, personal and self-support for PLHIV

4 Adherence and HIV/AIDS

MAIDS trainings became places where participants gain other important information about services for PLHIV, and have the opportunity to share experience. Mixed groups are good model for learning process of participants and attitude change.

Impressions of participants:

"My knowledge on topics of HIV and mental health is significantly improved. I am very satisfied. I received a lot of very useful information that I'm sure I would use."

(nurse, 7 years of practice, volunteer in NGO providing psychosocial support to PLHIV, female, 26 years old)

"I find that exchange of experience between experts from different professions is the most useful part of the training. I also liked the fact that exercises were dynamic; trainers' style of working; covering different issues related to HIV; optimism; benevolence and readiness of participants to work hard."

(general practitioner, 15 years of practice, volunteer in NGO dealing with IDUs, female, 46 years old)

"Topics covered by the training are very important aspects of fighting HIV/AIDS that were neglected. So, I had the opportunity to listen to issues I never thought about, or expected to hear on training. I am also very interested in hearing about group counselling work with PLHIV and work in self-help work."

(general practitioner, 5 years of practice, volunteer in NGO providing support to PLHIV, female, 35 years old)

News : training in Module 4 "Adherence and mental health" will take place in November 2008. All participants will be informed about exact dates and other details.
